CHURCH MUSIC AS A CATALYST FOR CHURCH GROWTH IN NIGERIA

Abstract

Church music has remained a vital component of Christian worship and ministry, serving
as a medium for spiritual expression, evangelism, discipleship, and communal
engagement. This paper examines church music as a catalyst for church growth in
Nigeria, highlighting its contribution to attendance, membership expansion, spiritual
development, and congregational unity. Drawing from biblical teachings and existing
literature, the study explores the nature and functions of church music, its ministerial
roles, and its relevance within the Nigerian Christian context. The paper reveals that
vibrant and well-organised music ministries enhance worship experiences, attract new
members, foster fellowship, and facilitate the proclamation of the gospel across cultural
and linguistic boundaries. It further emphasises the need for church music ministries to
operate with clear vision, purpose, spiritual discipline, and commitment to excellence.
The study concludes that church music is not merely an aspect of worship but a strategic
instrument for church growth and community transformation. It recommends among
others that church leaders and music ministers prioritise biblically grounded, spiritually
enriching, and culturally relevant music that promotes worship, evangelism, and
discipleship.
